Swift Justice Needs To Be A Little Swifter

I'm sure some of you remember my post from the start of the year about Phoebe Prince, the 15-year-old girl from Ireland who came to America and was harassed by classmates until she took her own life.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as "better late than never," but the Massachusetts DA has just filed charges against a bunch of kids.  Three are facing delinquency charges, and six more are facing rape, assault, and other charges.  However, school officials who turn a blind eye to this bullshit and let the mean kids run free will not face any charges.  Isn't that happy.

Will this work?  I don't know.  On the one hand, a case like this is very tough to pull off if the kids get their stories straight.  All they have to do is put doubt in the mind of just one person on the jury (no way this will be a bench trial), the jury is hung, and they skate.  However, given that the kids were stupid enough to take their abuse to online forums like Fecesbook, the DA could score a conviction of at least a few of them if she plays her cards right.

I'm sure the DA means well, but there's a problem.  This will do NOTHING to stop the terror and abuse in that school.  The school officials know damn well what is going on and who's responsible, and they aren't interested in doing anything for whatever reason.

Once again, there are days I'm grateful I don't have kids.  Thinking some of these idiots would be responsible for their safety scares the life out of me.

How horrible. And I don't understand why the school officials aren't being held accountable for not doing anything...

As you said, things like this make me realize it's for the best that I don't have children. :(

Not only why they aren't held accountable, but why they aren't protecting their charges. This whole "kids will be kids" thing is basically an excuse to let the ones they like get away with it. Notice that if you are a true rebel (punker or something other than a prep), they'll drop the hammer. But remind them of their own kids, "Ah, they didn't really mean it. You just need to work out your differences."

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.
