Stamp Of Disapproval

Religion is the opiate of the masses.

Revolution is the opiate of the intellectuals.

And when these two worlds collide....

Today at work, one of my co-workers gives me an e-mail she is requesting I check out.  It is an e-mail saying that Obama is asking for the creation of a stamp to celebrate the Eid Muslim holiday season.  The e-mail is full of hyperbole and anti-Muslim (and, by extention, anti-Obama) sentiment.

First, let me clear something up, and then I'll get to my philosophical problems with this "call to action."  The stamp has actually been around for eight years now, having first been issued on September 1, 2001 (ten days before 9/11).  It has been updated to reflect current first class postage rates since then.  The 42 cent design already exists.  The stamp first appeared when Shrub was President, so once again, you have people using Obama as punching bag again for something he's not even remotely connected with, trying to remind everyone of his Muslim background and how it will spell the End Of The Republic and so on.

So, that takes care of that.  But that's not the real reason the e-mail had me seeing red.  Okay, yes, the misrepresentation of the facts, intentional or not, is bad.  My problem is with its depicting of the Muslim religion.  Your average everyday Muslim is peaceful, lives in harmony, is responsible, and so on.  You don't join the Muslim religion and suddenly start advocating the violent overthrow of society.  That's just the Muslim lunatic fringe.

And guess what?

Christianity has its own lunatic fringe, too.

There are plenty of wars and terrorism acts and horrible crimes committed in the name of Christianity.  The Inquisition.  The Crusades.  Those Chinese babies baptized against their wills.  The Vatican with all its riches while their priests are supposed to take a vow of poverty.  People who use the Bible to validate their racism, sexism, and homophobia.  Hushing up sex abuse scandals.  Christians who feel they have the right to bomb abortion clinics and kill abortion doctors in cold blood.  Any Christian complaining about the violence and terrorism of the Muslim religion is hypocrisy.  It is arrogant self-righteousness that makes them no better than the terrorists they claim to be defending the country against.

Happy Birthday, Raff!

I'm about to go to bed for the night, but before I do, I just wanted to mention that my comic strip Stress Puppy turned two years old today.  It was exactly two years ago, October 15, 2007, that Rafferty Daniels and the staff of International TransGlobal hit the Internet, much to the chagrin of furries who said I was doing the strip completely wrong (or used to, at any rate.  The letters have quieted down).  So, 208 strips not counting the extras and a graphic novel.  Not a bad run for someone with as many misgivings as I had at the start.

So join me in raising a favorite drink in honor of Raff, Holly, and the rest of the crew that helps present my skewed view of the world, and to the readers who have kept the series running.  Thank you all.
