Compare And Contrast

My dad is talking with someone about my sister.  Said individual regards my sister as a real piece of work.  My dad concurs, saying how my sister has always needed people around her, how she'll do anything for approval, blah blah blah.

Then she asks the question, "What's your son like?"

My dad rolls his eyes like he's winding up a fastball.  "He doesn't give a shit what anyone else thinks of him.  The first car he bought with his own money was a Festiva.  He drove it until it had a quarter of a million miles until someone T-boned him.  He moved up to luxury -- an Escort.  I think he's on his third one.  He's never traded in a car, they have to get wrecked from under him.  He sees people with SUV's and stuff.  He's not a car guy, he doesn't care.  Someone looks down on him, he ignores them.  He's a computer geek, he loves animation, he loves to draw, and the strongest thing he drinks is TEA."

She looked taken aback.  "Wow.  That's pretty different."

I said, "You're not the first person who's said that."

The discussion was just shocking to me because not only has my dad not really held me in any real regard before, but all these things he initially regarded as stupid seem to have become testaments to my character in his eyes.  My, how things change.

Ray Cusick, Rest In Peace

Ray Cusick has just died.   He was 84.

For those of you who don't know who he was, he was a production designer for the BBC.  Among the designs of his that everybody knows is the Daleks.

Here's a couple of videos of him visiting the prop department and discussing the Daleks, how they came about, and so on.  Any Whovian worth his salt is going to find this fascinating.
