Good news -- Sony Pictures has greenlit a movie based on the epic game Shadow Of The Colossus.

Bad news -- the screenwriter is Justin Marks, who wrote the MST3K fodder Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun Li.

Others attached to the project are producer Kevin Misher, whose credits include The Interpreter and the upcoming Public Enemies with Johnny Depp. He's also developing a new movie version of Dune to be directed by Peter Berg (Hancock).

Well...it can't suck any worse that Double Dragon did.

A new movie version of Dune? Why? Don't get me wrong, it's a great story, but the mini-series version was as close to spot on as possible and the movie version wasn't so hot. Time plays a HUGE factor when telling that story. Why would anyone want to put together a trimmed down version again?

I concur. It sounds to me like someone has LotR envy. Movie studios are still looking for that epic fantasy. Maybe they are planning on breaking it in two, since most franchise movie deals these days automatically assume a sequel (Christian Bale and McG are on board for two Terminator movies, and the principals involved in the Batman revival signed for three. Downey, Paltrow, and Favreau are on for three Iron Man movies). I'm not sure it would work, as there is no clear division in the story where the first movie could end, but given Kill Bill split in two and was a hit, they could be counting on something like that happening.

On the bright side, unlike Eragon (a.k.a. Mary Sue Of The Rings), at least they are chasing something GOOD. I have doubts, though. Only the first book in the Dune trilogy ends on a high note. And even that doesn't last, as the story shifts from a noble rebellion to how human nature can't help but corrupt its own achievements, making Paul's decision at the end of the last book the true ultimate gesture. Between what is basically an indictment of how the goals of the individual are swept away by mass society (too many people participate it what it derides and don't notice it) and the various slams on religious manipulation, I think it'll be closer to Golden Compass than LotR.

P.S. A new movie version of Dune will also benefit from not having the obsessive weirdness of David Lynch to compete with.

Him or Alan Smithee (see the extended cut). I saw a bit of trivia that Lynch turned down directing "Return of the Jedi" to instead do "Dune". And here I would have thought the whole "Leia is your sister" thing would be right up his alley.

David Lynch...RotJ....

I am tagging this "Destroying childhood memories."

Just goes to show you...as much as I bitch about RotJ, it could have been a whole lot worse, and came very close to being so.
