Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride

So, next summer sees the release of the movie Thor, based on the Marvel comic.  You'd think everybody would be excited about this.

Not everyone.

A white supremacist bunch of assholes activist group is urging people to boycott the movie Thor because Heimdall, a Norse god, is being played by Idris Elba, a black man.  The Council Of Conservative Citizens posts on their new "boycott Thor" website (sorry, no links from me on that one),  "It [is] well known that Marvel is a company that advocates for leftwing ideologies and causes (And this is news to who, exactly?  -- G).  Marvel frontman Stan 'Lee' Lieber boasts of being a major financier of leftwing political candidates.  (Uh, yeah, it's called political freedom, mouth breather.  Don't like it?  Don't support his causes.  -- G)  Marvel has viciously attacked the Tea Party movement, conservatives and European heritage.  Now they have taken it one further, casting a black man as a Norse deity in their new movie Thor. Marvel has now inserted social engineering into European mythology."

First of all, most of these idiots are Christians.  What do they care about Norse mythology?  Second, HAVE THEY EVEN READ AN ISSUE OF THOR?!?  ASIDE FROM THE NAMES AND THE CITY, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH NORSE MYTHOLOGY!!!  My background in Norse mythology is pretty light, and even I know this stuff is made up.  What's next, bitching about the angels in Evangelion?  Elba, in fact, has taken a stance similar to my last point.  "Thor has a hammer that flies to him when he clicks his fingers. That's OK, but the colour of my skin is wrong?"

I love it when people make pissing off the deserving so damn convenient.  All you have to do is buy a movie ticket.

Not that I'm against a black man playing Thor, but what's with all of the race changes in Marvel?

Nick Fury and Thor are suddenly black. To me, who reads antique comments, this is just kinda weird. Like if Wonder Woman was suddenly Asian. That would be weird.

But its really stupid that people are actually OFFENDED by this.

Please don't think I'm being sarcastic, but which Thor? I thought the Thors in the comics were like the typical Thor, and the one in the movie is being played by some guy who does look Norse. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something. Remember, I don't read a lot of mainstreams.

It seems Marvel is moving in the opposite direction of DC. DC is trying to focus more on their Silver Age characters and getting rid of the newer versions. The problem is, most of the newer versions were different races, and people are accusing DC of racism for getting rid of them in favor of the Silver Age characters who just happened to be white.

I remember Falcon from Captain America (before they fucked him up with a stupid plot twist, which was lampooned mercilessly in Milestone Media's Icon comic). He wasn't a black guy, he was a genuine hero (is there any better endorsement than Captain America saying you're his kind of guy?). I also remember one of the Secret Wars, when War Machine and Reed Richards were preparing something, and War Machine took off his glove. He told Reed, "I'll be you're surprised to see a black man in here (the Iron Armor)." Reed responded, "I look at you and all I see is a hero." What happened to the days when heroes were just heroes, not marketing cliches?

I have more of a problem with the Marvel animated DVD movies, where Thor saves a bunch of whales from whalers and is basically like a kick ass flower child. Uh, the Norse were big on whaling. File that under "Did not do the research."

The black Nick Fury is from the Ultimates line, which is sort of an alternate universe for Marvel. Supposedly, the guy who designed Ultimate Nick Fury did model him on Sam Jackson. I don't care if Nick Fury was white, I have always been a Sam Jackson fan, and I think he's great as Nick Fury, and that's just with him moving the plot along. I can't wait for the Nick Fury movie they're talking about!

Here's what you need to know -- black Nick Fury is played by Sam Jackson. White Nick Fury was played by David Hasselhoff (I'm not kidding, you can still see it pop up on cable once in a while). I know which one I'd rather watch.

Thor?

lol I was unaware of the whole black/white Fury development. I know I opened a a spidey comic one day and there was a bald, black man with an eye-patch calling himself Nick Fury. xD

Ah, now I see the problem. The Thor in the movie coming out next year is played by Chris Hemsworth. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1165110/ Has some pics of him in costume and such.

Personally, I'm amused that those white supremacist idiots aren't commenting about how Natalie Portman is playing Thor's love interest in the movie. She was born in Israel and she's Jewish.

By the by, if you want to have some real fun with Thor, check out The Incredible Hulk Returns, a TV movie with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. It was intended to spin off a Thor TV series. Problem: a pagan god was a tough sell for middle America, so "Thor" was simply a Norse warrior whose spirit was trapped inside a hammer who would appear when a character held the hammer and yelled, "Odin!" Thor was played by Eric Allan Kramer, who also played Little John in Robin Hood -- Men In Tights. It was a stupid movie, but like all B-movies, it was still entertaining in its way.

It's too bad it's still a Marvel production. I'd love to hear the Sam Jackson Nick Fury ask for a weapon and say, "It's the one labeled, 'bad motherfucker.'"

Oh, And About Sam Jackson Nick Fury....
...if Sam Jackson says he's Nick Fury, then I'm not gonna argue with him!

Re: Oh, And About Sam Jackson Nick Fury....
LOL No one argues with Fury whether he's white, black puerto rican or asian. xD

And Thor was never one of my favorites, just he was one of the Avengers which meant he was occasionally in the vicinity of my beloved Captain America.

I approve. xD

It's my understanding (and my personal experience) that white supremacists are often huge fans of Norse mythos, especially of that idealized "pure" Nordic image. That image is precious to them.

I will defer to your knowledge and experience. It just struck me as odd because of how many of them talk about Christianity, the chosen people, and all that bullshit.

You know, I've seen the trailer for Thor and wasn't impressed, figuring I'd wait for the DVD and rent it. But now I have a strange urge to see it in the theater just to piss those people off.
