"That's the only little old place for little old me.
"Old times there are not forgotten, whupping slaves and selling cotton,
"And waiting for the Robert E. Lee (who was never there on time)."
"I Wanna Go Back To Dixie"
Mississippi (which I can only spell because of a song I learned in the first grade) is preparing specialty license plates to commemorate the 150 year anniversary of the Civil War (for us Yankees) or War Between The States (for the Johnny Rebs).
Among the proposed designs is one for Nathan Bedford Forrest.
Forrest was a Confederate general who led the 1864 massacre of black Union troops at Fort Pillow, Tennessee. After the war, he became grand wizard in the Ku Klux Klan in Tennessee.
The proposal comes from The Mississippi Division of Sons of Confederate Veterans, who say Forrest was a military genius. State NAACP president Derrick Johnson says Mississippi shouldn't honor a man who was an early leader of a terrorist group.
On the bright side, a fight is brewing over this. That means that not everyone in Mississippi thinks this is a good idea. May equality win out. PLEASE may equality win out.
