Better Late Than Never, Right?

This is NOT an attack on Charlie Sheen (well, it sort of is, you'll see what I mean), it is an indictment of the lip service paid to protecting our precious kids.  Bear with me, you'll see what I mean.

So, apparently, after the 20/20 interview of Charlie Sheen ran last night, his ex-wife Brooke Mueller had a restraining order sent to him and their kids were taken from his house and put into her custody.

Now, Sheen's interview made this the biggest no-brainer of the year.  No judge is going to approve of letting kids stay in a house like the one Sheen showed in the interview (a guy who brags about going on benders and such?  Nope, not a surprise).  And yes, the timing is odd, given that it happened in the middle of the night.

But here's the thing -- whatever might be said about the timing and motivations of Mueller in this, the fact remains that Sheen has had a loooong history of violence towards women.  If the art we create is a reflection of us, then maybe it's not surprising that Sheen plays such an arrogant chauvinist dickhead on his show.

If we set the Wayback Machine for 1990, we find Sheen living with Kelly Preston.  Inside their Malibu home, Sheen "accidentally" shot Preston with a .22.  She had injuries to her wrist and ankle (uh...how is that possible with an accidental shot?).  Preston broke up with him as soon as she was out of the clinic.

In 1994, Sheen married a model named Donna Peele (who he divorced later that same year.  He blamed Peele -- "You buy a bad car, it breaks down").  Two months after tying the knot with Peele, Sheen got sued by a UCLA student that claimed he propositioned her for sex, she refused, and he punched her in the head.  He settled out of court, NDA and all that.

1996.  Sheen is dating a porn star named Brittany Ashland.  Sheen beats Ashland.  Damage done -- seven stitches to her lip, knocked unconscious, and Sheen allegedly threatened to kill her.  Sheen gets arrested for domestic assault.  One of his buddies tries to white knight him by saying the fight was Ashland's fault.  In 1997, Sheen pleads nolo (no contest) to battery charges.  Two years probation and a $2,800 fine.

2006 -- Sheen's then wife Denise Richards files for divorce.  The allegations in the court documents include CP, drug use, prostitutes, gambling, throwing chairs, and numerous threats on Richards' life.  Richards got a restraining order and Sheen responded, "This is a most obvious immature and transparent smear campaign designed to hurt, embarrass and ultimately extort me."

2009 -- Merry Chistmas!  Sheen celebrated this most holy of holidays by getting arrested for felony second-degree assault, felony menacing and a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief after allegedly strangling, holding a knife to the throat of, and threatening to kill future ex-wife #3 Brooke Mueller.  In June of 2010, he pleaded guilty to third degree domestic violence and was sentenced to an outpatient rehab in Malibu that focused on "behavior modification" and didn't impact his shooting schedule in the least.

2010 -- Capri Anderson, Sheen's "paid companion" at the Plaza Hotel in NYC, locked herself in the bathroom until the rage subsided because he had wrapped his hands around her neck and threatened to kill her.

Three ex-wives.  I'm amazed he's had three DATES.

Now, look at that list above.  If CPS had seen even one of those with a regular person, those kids would have been gone in a heartbeat and they'd have him under a microscope, especially when it comes to custody hearings.

Who was it that decided Sheen's recent behavior was reason enough to pull the kids from him, but all that other violent bullshit was not?
