Numbers Racket

DC has announced that, with the conclusion of Flashpoint, all titles will reboot and restart at #1.

Are you idiots TRYING to make it impossible for me to keep my comics organized?!?

Zero Hour was bad enough.  The #0 issues are where they are supposed to be in the release schedule.  This is why I'm so glad I put that description label on my bags -- I can note the issue comes after issue whatever, so no, Peter, you didn't fuck up by putting this where you did (my Deadpool #900 and #1000 have notes explaining what is going on).  But if I was a longtime collector of Supergirl, how many different volumes would I need to keep track of?  Marvel has a similar problem with Captain America.

This probably means we're getting yet another Superman origin revamp.  Sheesh!  Supergirl doesn't have this many revamps, and she's been written out of continuity how many times?

I know everyone should care about the stories and such.  But it's getting to the point where trades is the only way to keep the stories straight now.

And this, this is why I will never become fully invested in comics.

This is probably why I got out of comics. That and because I have no money. Or there is the really good reason...no place to put them.

What is Flashpoint about? And how can it be worse than Zero Hour?

I'm not sure if Flashpoint will actually turn out worse than Zero Hour as far as quality goes (Final Crisis was worst, thanks to too fast pacing that caused a great deal of exposition to be missed and left readers scratching their heads, and a missed shipping schedule that blew surprises in regular books and regular books that blew surprises in FC. In fact, I'm still not entirely clear what exactly happened). But so far, Flashpoint has several strikes against it. Not the least of which is that this is an alternate timeline. Which means, once it's over, everything is more or less gone, so why get wrapped up in things? The editorial mission is to make you care about something that'll be a memory in a few months, and they aren't exactly up to the task.

Basically, while Flashpoint is running, most DC titles are suspended and replaced with other series, and they will be dumped when the show's over. I'm not bagging and boarding titles until I know what is going to happen (titles cancelled, renumbered, whatever).

I'll give you a quick rundown of Flashpoint in a second. What I remember, anyway, I just skimmed through it on the rack, I didn't bother to buy it. But first, I need to take a pull on the ol' Southern Comfort...

...okay, Daddy's better now.

Basically, Professor Zoom does something and Barry Allen winds up in an alternate timeline. Cyborg is the greatest hero and Superman is imprisoned by the government. Gotham City is more like Vegas than Detroit, and Wayne Casinos holds court there. Batman is actually Thomas Wayne, Bruce's dad. In this timeline, Bruce and his mom were killed, Daddy survived, swore vengeance, etc. (I seem to recall a story with this set-up being told at least once, if not twice already). Western Europe has fallen into chaos (Cyborg appears on TV with a message for Batman, explaining this to him. Uh, Batman was there, so there's no need for all that exposition directed at him. That's just sloppy writing), and the Amazons, led by Wonder Woman, have invaded England and turned it into their new home. They left the women alone, but they cut the men's balls off and left them to bleed to death (yes, really). For reasons I'm not entirely clear on, the Atlanteans, led by Aquaman, are at war with the Amazons, and their fighting continues to ravage Western Europe and Batman is concerned it could spread to America, but none of the heroes get along, so they aren't uniting yet because they need to pad out the page count.

And like I said, this will get unwound in a few months anyway, sort of like Age Of Apocalypse did with Marvel. That's why I'm not bothering to complain...it'll be over soon. It's just the renumbering that bugs me. And if it bothers me, I can only imagine what it'll do to the more OCD fans out there. Yikes.

It sounds much worse than Zero Hour to me. This is just thinking off the top of my head.

I think I need the whole bottle after reading what Wonder Woman and the Amazons did. Superman is imprisoned...not liking that. Then there is what the Amazons did..yet again.

I'm just glad it will be over soon. Let me know when it is over, and it is safe to go to the comic store.^_^
