A supporter of gun rights and the 2nd Amendment who also owns a handgun, she was shot at a shopping center meet and greet with her constituents at a shopping center on January 8 of this year by Jared Lee Loughner.
Eighteen others were shot that day. Six of them died. Loughner stopped to reload and was tackled by others, some with handguns, some without, but everyone working together. Giffords took a bullet in the head and has been slowly working her way back.
Frank Antenori, a state senator, has filed paperwork to run for the R's nomination for Giffords' seat in Pima County.
AND WHAT BETTER WAY TO RAISE CAMPAIGN FUNDS THAN WITH A GUN RAFFLE?!?
Mike Shaw is the chairman pro tem for the Pima County Republicans, and their most recent e-newsletter, Tracks, sent out August 26, declared, "Get yourself a new Glock 23 .40 cal handgun for just 10 bucks -- if your name is drawn." They are selling 125 tickets, $10 bucks each, the winner gets the gun, three twelve-round magazines, and a case. Oh, did I mention the make of gun Loughner used was a Glock?
Needless to say, certain people in the community are not amused. Jeff Rogers is the chairman for the Pima County Dems, and it fell to him to state the patently obvious. "When I first heard about this last week in an email, I said 'That's a joke, a sick joke. Nobody could be doing that. This is like tearing the scab off a wound. This community is still healing."
I'm sorry, but who in their right mind thought this was a good idea?
I know that, when you get to the American South and frontier country, guns are just part of everyday life. But when you start mixing up gun rights and the 2nd Amendment into this particular debate, you are missing the point. This isn't about whether or not guns are bad. It's about raising money by raffling off a gun similar to the one that nearly killed the person you are campaigning against.
In other words, the question isn't whether or not Antenori and Shaw are assholes. The question is, How big of assholes are they?
My opinion? Jupiter-sized and getting bigger.
