I was asked what exactly is lens flare. While I described it, it is a visual phenomena, so it's better served with pics.
Now, I don't own any of these images, I just got them from the Intertubes to help illustrate my point, so I make no claim to any of them.
First, a perfect example, removed of other elements. Experience the purity of lens flare:
Okay, so you have the flare coming out from around the light source. Now, the additional circles and lines in the lens flare? Those are referred to as "artifacts".
Courtesy of our friends at NASA:
Notice we get huge flare around the sun here and lots of artifacts in the lower right of the pic.
Some of you might think this picture is ruined to to excessive lens flare. But there is no such thing as excessive lens flare. Too much is never enough.
This would normally just be a standard piece of deviantART, but as you can see, it becomes a masterwork thanks to lens flare.
My God! Artistic genius! Revelations about the role of the individual in mass society are rushing through my head at the speed of light!
Even the emo kids love lens flare! And for those of you wondering how the FAIL rock of Hannah Montana sells so many records, videos, and concert tix? Lens flare. Hannah Montana specifically picks outfits that give the greatest chance of lens flare. This is why her concert film set a record and the Jonas Brothers were a disappointment. They didn't embrace lens flare.
As I'm sure you can agree, LENS FLARE MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER!
Don't worry, I haven't forgotten you goths. We'll discuss high contrast next time....
