Garbo...I Mean, Derpy Speaks!

4shatteredstars asked me to mention when I saw this.

I did.

This morning, I'm having breakfast and watching a little FiM, and I start the episode The Last Roundup.  After the opening credits, there's a roughly one minute set piece involving Derpy.

Derpy talks.  And she's called "Derpy" by Rainbow Dash.  And the scene is funnier than hell.  People at other tables were looking at me.

Derpy is voiced by Tabitha St. Germaine.  She also provides the voice of Rarity.

However, I'm about to endorse Internet piracy here.  The original cut of the episode (the one I have) has Rainbow Dash calling her Derpy.  However, if you go on iTunes, the original version of the episode is pulled.  Instead, there is a "remastered" version where Dash not only doesn't call her by name, but Derpy's voice is changed.  The episode will be appearing on a DVD, but as I haven't found the DVD and acquired it yet, I can't tell you which version is on the disc.

So what I'm saying is, Fuck the Orwellian revision.  She's Derpy.  Get the version that proves it.

Two comments about censoring the word "derpy":

1) Words can have all kinds of weird meanings that you don't mean. There's a Transformer called Spastic. The name is different in England because over there, "Spastic" has a far more negative connotation than just the general insult it is here in the US. Also keep in mind that "basket case" is also far more horrific (it's a soldier who lost both his arms and both his legs in combat) instead of the just plain crazy thing here. Just saying that, as much as being considerate is nice, you can't catch everything, and there are times when it actually is completely innocent and it's just going a little too far.

2) You gotta love a place that will censor out the word "derpy" because it could be offensive to some people but will let you watch video and catch podcasts and reports about the Washington Redskins. * rolls eyes *

I didn't have a problem with Derpy's voice, although maybe because she sold the read -- I love listening to it, there's just this veneer of thickness over the words that is so perfect for the character. I suppose it could have sounded more feminine, but Tabitha had to have done something right, or the production staff would have clued her in.

Faust stepping down? I didn't hear about that. I know that, this year, she was only a consulting producer, and for the first year, she was an executive producer. Maybe she feels everyone can maintain the show's momentum and she can move on to something else. As Super Best Friends Forever shows, she's in demand now. Remember, Faust got the offer for MLP while she was pitching one of her original projects to the HUB. Maybe she has enough leverage to make one of her visions really shine (read that: no network interference). No matter what, I'm looking forward to what she does next.

There are a ton of conflicting reports about Derpy.

And a petition to save her.
