iCon Chicago: Hell No! I Won't Go!

One thing you need to remember is that your name is your brand.  Who you associate with says a lot about you and is a factor for other people as to whether or not they want to get mixed up with you.  Sooner or later, you have to make decisions about who you ally with and who you oppose.

I've been doing this for a while, even before I started running in the trenches.  Since then, thanks to Bleeding Cool, thanks to the books, thanks to the connections I've made, I'm a little bit of a big deal in the small pond that is the Chicago comic book scene.

I mention this because this is my first pre-emptive strike.  I have not been contacted about appearing at this show yet, but I don't care.  I'm burning this bridge now.  I was made aware of it by Dan Royer, the great guy who runs DanCon.

The con in question is called iCon Chicago.  It will be held at the Orland Park Civic Center in November.  It is being put on by the comic store Bereau Of Metahuman Research, which is a subsidiary of Alfred E. Shirtman.  Basically, they are copying Royer's hard work and being very unsubtle about it.  And anyone who saw them at DanCon knows they got a bad vibe about them.

Now, this is my protest.  Not yours.  I may be asking you to participate, but the choice is still yours and I will not begrudge your decision.  For me, it's crystal clear.  Royer is a great guy who deserves better than to have someone riding his coattails like this.  You couldn't get me to appear at iCon if I was offered free table space, $1000, and Jessica Alba dressed as a mermaid and blowing me the entire time.

Down here in the trenches, we look out for each other, not stab each other in the back.  My lot is with Dan Royer and DanCon.

Oh, and a quick confidential to the folks running iCon -- be very careful what circles you move in.  There's a lot of power players who will grind you up and spit you out.  I know.
