You See Him! He's Real!

It was a couple of years ago that I was watching the Star Wars Christmas Special (RiffTrax version) with Mornblade and his charming wife.  Partway through, the special changes from live action to animation, giving us the first appearance of Boba Fett.  During the animated bit, Luke pilots a Y Wing Fighter to a planet.  Once landed, the cockpit section separates from the rest of the craft for independent travel.

I told Mornblade to stop the video as I stared at the screen.  I explained to him a memory from when I was a kid.  There was a toy that I had wanted for Christmas.  It was a spaceship that three pieces, with a detachable middle, and when in that configuration, it looked remarkably like the Y Wing Fighter in the animation.

Mornblade and his charming wife just looked at me and nodded their heads like I was going to ask if I could leave them with some literature.

Since then, I have tried to recall any details about the toy, if for no other reason than to prove I wasn't crazy.

And today, by sheer luck, I have it.  Mornblade?  This one's on me.

This is the Star Bird.

It had a sensor to detect when it was in close proximity to the ground and would adjust its engine noise accordingly.  This model is missing the two black vertical wings that went on the upward bends on the back sections.  But there you go -- the toy I wanted and, in retrospect, was loosely inspired by the Y Wing Fighter.

Looking at it, the "Star Bird" emblem looks a LOT like a Rebel Alliance symbol, and the grey dome on the back looks vaguely like an R2 unit.

You got me. It existed. I don't actually recall ever seeing it before, but there it is.
