Change Of Heart

Last week, I took the time to bash Tim Tebow for agreeing to speak at the First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, with a pastor who represented hatred and intolerance.  I wrote that Tebow was negligent in not doing his homework on the megachurch, and if he did and was speaking at it anyway, he was as far from being a Christian hero as you could get.

Well, it appears Tebow did not, in fact, do the research.  Today, he bailed on his appearance.  Take it away, Tebow:

"While I was looking forward to sharing a message of hope and Christ's unconditional love with the faithful members of the historic First Baptist Church of Dallas in April, due to new information that has been brought to my attention, I have decided to cancel my upcoming appearance.  I will continue to use the platform God has blessed me with to bring Faith, Hope and Love to all those needing a brighter day.  Thank you for all of your love and support.  God Bless."

I note with some interest that Tebow is not slamming the FBC, just saying new information has made him change his mind.  I take back all the bad things I said or implied in my last post about him.  Tebow is being a class act.

Too bad the FBC can't follow his lead.  They sent out the following in a press release:

"We are saddened that Mr. Tebow felt pressure to back out of his long-planned commitment to First Baptist Dallas from numerous New York (what does that have to do with anything?  -- G) and national sports and news media who grossly misrepresented past comments made by our pastor, Dr. Robert Jeffress, specifically related to issues of homosexuality and AIDS, as well as Judaism (Uh, no, Jeffress made his intent perfectly clear.  Not a lot of grey area there. -- G).  As a Christian pastor, Dr. Jeffress takes a biblical approach to moral and social issues, closely following his duty to preach 'the whole counsel of God,' and not just address issues that are politically correct.  First Baptist is a church built on the truth of Scripture, even though at times that approach can be perceived as controversial or counter to the prevailing winds of culture.  The reason for the recent media firestorm is not because the Word of God has changed, but because society has changed."

I think I'm gonna puke.  The statement basically says, "How dare you say that the leader of a religion that teaches tolerance and understanding should show tolerance and understanding of others.  I'm not an asshole, I'm living honestly, and you are judging me unfairly.  It's your problem."

Make no mistake, Tebow has just taken a bullet.  Already, the Twitter feeds are abuzz with the very supporters who championed him as a Christian hero saying he has betrayed the Religious Right (the Religious Right is neither, by the way).  Never mind that, by standing up for his beliefs, for standing up for Christianity as a philosophy of love and acceptance instead of attacking and fear mongering, he is acting more like a true Christian than any of these dipshits.  Nope, they are abandoning him.  Your own personal Jesus just became your own personal Judas.  We don't deserve God's mercy or Christ's love.

No wonder people want examples of Christianity.  They are such lousy examples themselves.
