...you know, the word "Isis" has existed for centuries. Some people know it as the name of an Egyptian diety responsible for healing and motherhood. Some of us know the word as the name of a superheroine from Saturday morning TV who fought alongside Captain Marvel and rhymed like Nipsy Russell. The word means many things to many people. It is not automatically affiliated with the terrorist organization.
Which seems to be news to some people.
In the town of Englewood, Colorado, is a spiritual bookstore called Isis Books & Gifts. New Age stuff, psychic readings, and that sort of stuff. Last weekend, after the Paris terrorist attacks where claimed by ISIS, the store was vandalized. Someone smashed the sign out front. This is the fifth attack on the store in the past year.
Apparently, there are some locals who think that the store is affiliated with ISIS instead of being named for the Egyptian goddess. As co-owner Jeff Harrison said, there are "some ignorant people believing that somehow the terrorists have a store, a gift store, in the middle of Denver, Colorado." And for those of you wondering if these people are on drugs...well, this IS Colorado. (So much for all the talk that marijuana makes you less violent.) I have to wonder if they want Archer blacked out on cable because they think it's a propaganda arm.
The store has been around since 1980, and Harrison and his wife, Karen, have owned it since 1997. They are so used to being attacked, they don't even bother filing police reports when this goes down. And he is refusing to change the name.
Fortunately, cooler heads are prevailing, and Harrison says there has been an uptick in business lately. But one thing's for sure -- if you're thinking of starting a business, try to find an area where memories go back further than Thursday.
