We're at Christmas mass tonight at our usual church. For the past few years, the priest will have a birthday cake with candles. He will invite the kids to come up, sing Happy Birthday to Jesus, then blow out the candles. Usually, the cake is simply at the altar as soon as service begins. This time, however, it was waiting in the wings, and he brought it out in a gift-wrapped box.
As soon as he brought it out, my teacher and I looked at each other, smiled, and said in perfect unison, "What's in the booooooooox?!?"
The priest knows me too well. He just rolled his eyes and shook his head at this guy who somehow worked a reference to Se7en into Christmas mass. There was some suppressed laughter, too.
But what I note is that my teacher not only made the same joke I did, but she couldn't stop herself from making it just like me.
I don't know if I should be proud or ashamed of myself.
