The US Patent Office just granted M$ a patent on "sudo".

Yes, the same sudo that has been a Unix command since 1980.

Oh, wait.  This is sudo with a gui.  That makes it different enough to patent it.

It's patent number 7617530.

I certainly hope that someone is going to take that one to court and fast.

We're working on it.

The problem with a patent review is, unless you are being sued and hence your fate is on the bubble, the patent office will only review patents that are deemed to have compelling evidence that a mistake was made. Now, it has happened before and is happening now (we are digging for evidence to overturn M$' FAT patent), but otherwise, if you want the glacier to start moving, you have to be directly involved.

It remains to be seen if M$ will actually try to sue anyone. It seems like it, since the patent they describe is so close to the gui SUDO used by Ubuntu, which has experienced exponential growth in the FOSS field. Or maybe it's just to add to their, "Linux violates our patents!" drum beating. Either way, no way this goes unchallenged.
